The Central Committee of America's Socialist Party was incorporated as a not-for-profit corporate structure in Indiana. Its legal name is Socialist Central Committee, Ltd.

Indiana is the heartland of American Socialism. In fact, the term “socialism” was first used by Robert Owen who traveled from Scotland to New Harmony, Indiana in 1824. Indiana is also home to Eugene V. Debs, one of America's best known socialists. At the Socialist Unity Convention in Indianapolis in 1901, Debs was responsible for the unification of various socialist organizations into the Socialist Party of America.

One of Indiana's best known socialists of recent times is Kurt Vonnegut. Vonnegut is widely considered one of the most influential American writers of the 20th century. Four proteges of another Socialist Party of America member and personal friend of Vonnegut – Ronald Haldeman, incorporated the Socialist Central Committee, Ltd.

The Central Committee is an autonomous project management corporation with administrative oversight responsibility for America's Socialist Party.

The corporate mandate of the Central Committee is to uniformly develop autonomous local and state franchises that will be able to function nationally as a cohesive political party. This uniform development is accomplished by the design and implementation of national standards that can be adhered to by local grassroots efforts without infringing upon local autonomy to deal effectively with local and regional issues.

The Central Committee is divided into two distinct authorities - The Executive Council and the National Committee.

The Executive Council is the administrative authority of the Central Committee. The Executive Council functions as a project management team, providing guidance and oversight to state and local franchises. The Executive Council directs the implementation of national standards and National Committee policies.

The National Committee is the policy-making authority of the Central Committee. The National Committee is comprised of the directors of each state socialist association of America's Socialist Party.
